Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder

Hourglass-Cosmetics-Ambient-Light-Powder-for-Spring-2013-1There has been a lot of buzz about this product. I finally decided to order two of these, the lightest and the darkest.. the only ones left on the website Hourglasscosmetics.com

What are they? powder? highlighter? How do you apply? Do I need to buy the brush as well when I have so many top powder and blush brushes ? I think not.

According to the brand, the secret is  “photoluminescent technology” - micron-size spherical particles that refract light and create transparent coverage, unlike opaque pigments in usual powders. The powder is also paraben, talc, fragrance, nano-particles and gluten free.

The website writes: “A wardrobe of six universal finishing powders that recreate the most exquisitely flattering light—from ethereal moonlight to luminous candlelight. Each powder captures, diffuses and softens surrounding light with groundbreaking photoluminescent technology. Choose one or more and step into your perfect light.”

They come in six shades. I think that is plenty. The website describes each shade as follows:

 Hourglass-Cosmetics-Ambient-Light-Powder-for-Spring-2013-2

DIFFUSED LIGHT: A soft, warm, pale yellow powder. Light your skin with DIFFUSED LIGHT to reduce redness and give skin clarity – like a soft ray of morning light.

ETHEREAL LIGHT: An opalescent sheer, cool white powder. Light your skin with ETHEREAL LIGHT to mimic a moonlit glow – even in broad daylight.

RADIANT LIGHT: A sun-kissed golden beige powder. Light your skin with RADIANT LIGHT to extend a summer glow, or enhance the overall complexion with believable, subtle, warmth.

MOOD LIGHT: A soft, sheer lavender pink powder. Light your skin with MOOD LIGHT to mimic the softest most forgiving light and reveal your brightest complexion.

DIM LIGHT: A neutral peach beige powder. Light your skin with DIM LIGHT to blur imperfections and highlight a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones.

LUMINOUS LIGHT: A champagne pearl powder. Light your skin with LUMINOUS LIGHT to create a soft, incandescent candlelit glow – day or night.

When my 2 compacts arrive in 2 days time, I will take photos and post them here and give you a follow up review on these. In the meantime if you want to go check them out at Sephora, they retail for $45, and the brush retails for $35.

John Masters Organics: rose and apricot day creme

I discovered today a new brand of skincare, all organic, while visiting the whole foods store during my lunch hour. I tried their products and loved this one in particular, the rose and apricot day cream.

The actual product comes with a lid over the pump, and is a small 30ml size suitable to carry in your bag at all times and apply mid day on your face to combat the effects of air conditioning and pollution. It does not have spf in it, for me that is perfect since I am sitting at my desk all day, except at lunch time when I get to go for a walk.

Bobbi Brown makeup look

I like bone cream eyeshadow because it can be used on most eyelids and you can add a light shade shadow over it or even a darker shade eyeshadow.

Bobbi’s face creams are great, I like her hydrating cream but my favorite is the Vitamin face base, which has such a beautiful scent.

Her brushes are decent quality. Room for adding more precise application brushes, but her style is simple so she feels no need to add more sophisticated brushes to her collection.

When to do a natural makeup look – and when not to

I recently had the opportunity to work with a bridal party and today will be discussing the makeup look of an Asian woman. She advised that she does not wear much makeup and wanted a look that was ‘very natural’ looking. Though it was not my choice, as I could see her stunning with a look I had in mind for her, as I did not get the green light to make her up as I wanted and felt my hands were tied.

_DSC8354This lovely lady had a beautiful skin and a great smile. What is missing is some color on the face.

_DSC8356

Since the request was for a ‘very natural’ looking makeup, I did the best to enhance her and took her makeup to a level where she felt comfortable. She was quite happy with the results so I could not change or add anything after showing her this look.

_DSC8359

Her hair was already done, and all that was left was her face (makeup). So her face was prepared and the skin made up to look uniform, all small imperfections were covered under a layer of moisturizer, primer, concealer and then last but not least, foundation. All done in a way to let her skin breathe, nothing too heavy, not heavily layered. The goal here is to make her forget she is wearing anything on her face.

Eyes were subtly shaded with a medium gray shadow, lips received a light pink lipstick, and cheeks had a medium shade blush, well blended. She was very happy with the look. The dress color is rose, and she sure will feel in her ‘skin’ without having too much color on her face. My view is that we could have done a stunning look on her, but often we have to give what we are asked, as makeup artists and it is more important to me that she is happy and satisfied with her look than me telling her she would look better otherwise.

Dior foundation brush: thicker, fuller, longer, wider

_7145821

You cannot  go past this brush and not take a look at it, want to touch it, caress it, then buy it. It is one of the top brushes in the middle range, meaning affordable, that you can find on the market these days. The one that comes after this, is the new Chanel brush, also priced at $45 plus tax.

These giant names have finally figured out that a narrow, not thick brush will no longer please those of us who consider themselves professional makeup ‘people’. If you have had a brush or two before, you know that there is always something better that will be born soon.. and this is the better we were expecting.

Here is what Nordstrom’s website has to say about this brush and its sister brushes: (there are 4 I believe in this elegant collection).

A collection of four expertly designed foundation brushes. Each brush is specially angled to offer a different level of coverage for a luxurious and flawless application and tailor-made makeup results.

Featuring an elegant black wooden handle, the layered tapered hairs of the fluid and cream foundation brush help makeup blend into an ultra-thin, flawless finish. The large head makes it fast and easy to apply over the entire face.

Dior Nude lipsticks for summer

_7145801

How long can one stay away from the makeup counters? me? not too long. If I am good two or 3 weeks, and manage to keep my money in my pocket, eventually I have to pay a visit to my favorite department store, Nordstrom.

So today while I was looking for a ‘task’ to do during my lunch hour, I decided to hop on the train and pay a brief visit to the Dior counter at Nordstrom and see what they have. I found out that they foundation brush (the new one) is actually thicker and fuller than the Chanel one that I had in mind.. so I got that. I also took a quick look to their amazing lipsticks and discovered they have some shades that are so natural looking. I investigated a bit online and found these shades which are part of the Nude collection. So if you are looking for nice summer shades, check these out. They are $32 each. This is what the website says:

Nude does not end with a flawless complexion. Dior presents a collection of lipsticks that take nude to the next level. A collection of eight radiant lip-blush shades, instantly hydrates, plumps and smoothes lips for an elegant finish.

Bobbi Brown Makeup Advice

Let’s learn from the experts. Today I am going to post here words from Bobbi Brown on expert makeup application. Let’s see what we can learn. Here is what she says:

Bobbi Brown advice on foundation

Look for foundations that have a slightly yellowish cast to them. This may surprise you, but whether you’re pale or dark, you have some yellow undertones in your complexion. (Even if you’re extremely pale, a pink, peach or whitish shade will look chalky and old-fashioned.) A yellow-based foundation will blend beautifully into your skin tone, making it look fresh and healthy, which is exactly what a great foundation should do.

Use foundation to perfect your skin tone, not create a new one. It’s tempting to go a shade darker to give yourself a more tanned look–but that never ends up looking natural. Always try to match your exact skin tone.

Ecotools-brushes-2 (1)

Swatch your skin. In natural light, make a stripe of the foundation from your cheek to your jaw line, and gently blend it into your skin. Now do the same with another foundation that’s one shade lighter and another that’s one shade darker. The shade that’s imperceptible should be your pick, but double-check it against your forehead, since some women tend to be darker here. If it works in both areas, you’ve picked a winner.

Keep up with the seasons. I recommend having two foundations on hand–one for the winter months, when your skin is naturally paler, and one for the summer months, when your skin is slightly darker. For those in-between months, blend the two to develop your own custom shade. And year-round, mix the two to address any areas where your skin is darker or lighter.

You Have: A dull, dry complexion
You Want: Glowing, dewy skin
Try: A hydrating foundation. There are moisturizing foundations that deliver sheer coverage (like tinted moisturizers or balms) or medium to full coverage (like creamy liquids and whipped foundations). Stay away from powder and mattifying formulas. They’ll zap your skin of oils, leaving your skin looking dry and chalky.

You Have: Oily skin
You Want: Smooth, matte skin
Try: An oil-absorbing foundation. Look for buzzwords like oil-free, mattifying, or shine-reducing on the foundation’s packaging. As a general rule, oil-free or oil-reducing liquid foundations impart light to medium coverage, while cream and compact foundations give you full coverage.

You Have: Combination skin
You Want: A uniform complexion that’s neither shiny nor dry.
Try: A foundation with silica beads and lecithin. The silica beads soak up oil on your t-zone (forehead, nose & chin), while the lecithin hydrates dryer areas like your cheeks.

Bobbi Brown thoughts on concealer

Concealer is my ‘desert island’ cosmetic – I wouldn’t dream of living without it. More than lipstick or mascara, concealer is the one product that I feel most dramatically improves the way you look. When applied correctly, it instantly makes you appear awake and refreshed, no matter what’s going on in the outside world.

Covering Up Dark Circles

What You’ll Need:

To conceal dark circles, you’ll need a yellow-based creamy concealer, in one shade lighter than your natural skin tone. This color masks the blue discoloration and brightens the skin. If you’re extremely fair, a porcelain-toned concealer will work.

If you’re lucky and you need very little coverage, a stick foundation one to two shades lighter than the rest of your face can double as your concealer.

If you have extreme darkness, use a corrector. Peach or pink in color, a corrector counteracts the purple or green tones underneath the eyes that a concealer can’t cover on its own. If your skin is pale, choose the lightest colors, starting with bisque or light pink. For deeper skin tones, choose a medium or dark peach.

BB working shot at Roland Mouret.previewHow To Do It:

Apply a light eye cream underneath the eye area. It should absorb quickly and leave your skin feeling smooth.

  • If you’re using a corrector, use a concealer brush or your fingertip to apply it at the inner corner of the eye. Continue placing the corrector underneath the eye, staying close to the lashes and patting the corrector wherever your see darkness. Gently blend the corrector by pressing it with your fingers. You’re now ready to apply your concealer.
  • Use a concealer brush or your index finger to apply the concealer in thin layers. Be sure to blend well.
  • Apply the concealer all the way up to your lash line and – this part is critical – onto the dark areas by the inner corners of your eyes.
  • Use more concealer than you think you need, and blend it into the skin, using your fingers in a soft, patting motion.
  • If you still see dark circles, go ahead and apply a second layer of concealer.
  • To the lock the concealer into place, apply pale yellow powder over the concealer and on the eyelids with a powder puff.

Ecotools-brushes-2 (1)Concealing a Blemish
How to do it:

Apply a lightweight moisturizer to smooth your skin and prime it for perfect makeup application.

  • Using a concealer brush, apply a stick foundation or cover-up stick onto the blemish, making sure that the shade matches your skin exactly. Don’t use your under eye concealer on a blemish. Because concealer is designed to be one shade lighter than the skin on the rest of your face, a bright, light spot of concealer on a blemish will look awkward and out of place against your complexion.
  • Finish by using a powder puff to apply a small amount of face powder onto the blemish. This locks your cover-up in place.

Concealing a Scar

How to do it:

First, you have to understand that it may not be entirely possible to cover up the scar 100%.  But, you can make it less noticeable with makeup.

Apply a lightweight moisturizer to smooth your skin and prime it for perfect makeup application.

  • Next, apply concealer or a creamy foundation directly onto the scar using a concealer brush or your fingers, and set with your skin-tone correct foundation.
  • Finish by using a powder puff to apply powder, locking the foundation in place.

Ecotools-brushes-2 (1)Diffusing Wrinkles

How to do it:

Ultra-rich moisturizers and creamy makeup formulas are the key to getting smooth-looking skin.

Be sure to exfoliate on a regular basis with a gentle scrub or an AHA cream. This helps stimulate cell turnover and sloughs off dead skin cells, which can make skin look dull and prevent your foundation from going on smoothly.

  • Make sure your skin is well hydrated. A great moisturizer literally plumps up your skin.
  • Stick to creamy formulas of concealer, foundations and blush. Powder can settle into wrinkles, making them more visible.
  • No one has wrinkles on their cheeks, so play them up with a little extra blush.
  • If you have lines around your lips, keep the area moist.  Try using a lip balm on and around the lip area and don’t try to conceal the wrinkles with foundation.  Instead, pick a creamy lipstick and matching lip pencil to prevent feathering.

TROUBLESHOOTING: Corrector or Concealer

Your concealer and corrector should be undetectable. If they aren’t, you’ll have to tweak your application method. Here are some common concealer and corrector problems and my time-tested solutions for solving them.

If it looks crepey
The thin skin underneath your eyes needs to be hydrated, since makeup settles into those tiny dryness lines. Remember to apply eye cream every night and every morning before your makeup application.

If it slips off
You’ve likely applied too much moisturizer beforehand. Keep your concealer and corrector on for longer by using less than a pea-sized amount of moisturizer, and then waiting until it fully absorbs before applying your makeup.

If it creases
It needed to be set with enough powder. After applying your concealer, sweep sheer loose powder over the under eye area to lock your makeup into place.

If it’s cakey or streaky
Your ratio of eye cream to concealer is off. If your concealer looks thick and muddy, you’ll need to apply more eye cream. If your concealer looks greasy and separated, you’ve applied too much eye cream. Add or remove product as necessary. (You may have to start from scratch.)

If it’s too light
Very carefully, use the lightest dusting of light bronzing powder to warm up the area.

If it’s not bright enough or if it’s too dark
Add a tiny dab of fast-absorbing eye cream, and then re-apply your corrector and concealer.
